President's Charge
TO: Strategic Planning Committee
FROM: Joanne K. Glasser
SUBJECT: Charge to the Strategic Planning Committee
DATE: October 22, 2002
I want to thank you for agreeing to serve on the Strategic Planning
Committee that has the very important task of guiding the University’s
Strategic Planning process. The role of the Committee is even more important
as we move into the final leg of the SACS accreditation cycle. As you
are probably aware, a SACS consultant visited us this summer and supplied
us with several recommendations meant to align our efforts with the
new SACS standards. The above leads to an urgent charge to the committee
for the 2002-2003 Academic Year. The charge is to include the following:
- Revisit and affirm the historic and present mission of the institution
beginning with the Board adopted Mission Statement, Institutional
Goals, and Strategic Directions (see the Catalog).
- Develop and submit for approval through appropriate university channels
a limited number of strategic directions with measurable outcomes
for the University’s Strategic Plan. The Institutional Goals
and Strategic Directions along with the work done by the 2001-2002
Ad Hoc Strategic Budget and Planning Committee provide information
and a place from which to begin.
- Work with the Budget Council to develop and submit for approval
through appropriate university channels a plan to link the strategic
directions with the budget process and allocations for the 2004 and
beyond academic year.
- Establish the role of committee and mechanism by which the strategic
planning process will be assessed and a plan by which the assessment
will be used to improve and modify the institutional plan.
- Create and publish a draft Strategic Plan by Spring 2003 that includes
the revisited mission statement, relevant institutional data, a limited
number of University strategic directions, and a template for Colleges,
departments and units to follow to align unit planning (with outcomes)
to the University Strategic Plan.
This charge represents an ambitious agenda for the Strategic Planning
Committee, but one that is extremely important to the success of EKU
and to our reaccreditation. As such, the committee’s charge needs
to be accomplished as soon as possible. Therefore, I am asking that
the committee make every effort to complete the above charge by the
end of the 2003 Spring Semester and would appreciate interim reports
in December and March. I know that accomplishing the charge in this
time frame will require significant time and effort and I offer my sincere
appreciation for your commitment to the needs of Strategic Planning
at Eastern Kentucky University.
