Strategic Planning Manual - History
In October 2003, President Joanne Glasser appointed a University Strategic
Planning Committee to update and revise the EKU strategic plan. The
University 2003-2006 Strategic Plan built on the foundation of previous
strategic plans and set out to delineate the mission, values, vision,
goals, strategic directions and indicators of performance. The plan
addressed the role of Eastern Kentucky University in Kentucky’s
higher education reform as outlined in the strategic plan of the Council
on Post Secondary Education—Vision 2020.
The 2006 - 2010 Strategic Plan builds on the 2003 - 2006 Strategic
Plan, what we have learned from implementing the 2003 - 2006 Plan, how
our environment has changed, and what our environment is going to look
like in 2010. The primary goal of the strategic plan is to position
EKU for its future so that the University will be prepared to respond
effectively and proactively in a rapidly changing higher education environment.
Although we are dedicated to accountability, we also recognize that
a strategic plan must be a fluid and dynamic document: Refinements must
be made as we meet new challenges and formulate new goals, always seeking
to improve EKU as an institution and to contriubute to the enhancement
of the quality of life for members of the EKU community. As campus-wide
planning is continually implemented, modifications to the university
strategic plan will be made as opportunities arise to refine and revise
our vision, mission, institutional goals, and strategic directions.
The university strategic plan is the framework within which the planning
groups and reporting units of the university develop their particular
goals, strategies and performance measurements for the next several
years. These relationships are tracked and made clear through the use
of TracDat, a software package which allows for university-wide documentation
of planning and assessment activities. The combined unit plans contribute
to and support the overall mission, directions and goals of the university.
Taken together with the university strategic plan, these unit plans
form a comprehensive university plan—which establishes the major
strategic directions of the university.
